Understanding SSC CHSL Typing Test Rules

The SSC CHSL typing test is a qualifying round — you either pass or fail. There is no merit ranking based on typing scores. Understanding the error calculation rules is critical because even a fast typist can fail if they make too many Full Mistakes.

Full Mistake (1 error each)

Wrong word typed, extra word added, word omitted entirely, words typed in wrong order. Each counts as 1 full deduction from your word count.

Half Mistake (0.5 error each)

Spacing errors, capitalisation errors, minor spelling errors where the word is still recognisable. Two half mistakes equal one full mistake in the deduction.

The Qualifying Standard

English typing: 35 WPM net (after error deductions) over 10 minutes. Hindi typing: 30 WPM net. The formula is: Net WPM = (Total Words Typed − Full Mistakes − (Half Mistakes × 0.5)) ÷ 10 minutes.

Common Reasons Candidates Fail

Typing too fast without accuracy: Gross WPM of 45 with 15 full mistakes gives you a net WPM of only 30 — which fails. Speed without accuracy is the most common failure pattern.

Capitalisation and spacing errors: These are half mistakes, but they add up fast. 10 spacing errors = 5 full mistake equivalents deducted from your score.

Stamina collapse in the last 2 minutes: Many candidates maintain good speed for 8 minutes then make a burst of errors in the final stretch when fatigue sets in.
