About Typing Practice on HomebaseWorks

Typing speed is the most commonly tested skill for entry-level online jobs. Whether you're applying for chat support, transcription, virtual assistant, or government clerical roles, your screening test will measure two things: words per minute (WPM) and accuracy percentage. Most employers calculate Net WPM, which subtracts an error penalty from your gross typing speed. This means accuracy matters as much as raw speed.

HomebaseWorks offers six typing practice formats. Each format simulates a specific category of employer screening test. Office and chat support roles use 60–90 word passages with everyday vocabulary. Transcription roles use 150-word passages with punctuation and proper nouns. Government typing exams use 500-word passages over a 10-minute timed window. Stamina tests measure your ability to maintain consistent speed and accuracy over extended periods — relevant for full-time work-from-home roles.

All practice tests are free and require no sign-up. You can repeat any test as many times as needed to improve your score. Most users improve five to ten WPM within two weeks of daily fifteen-minute practice sessions. Consistency produces better results than occasional long sessions. After completing a test, you'll see your gross WPM, net WPM, accuracy percentage, and which job roles match your current skill level.

HomebaseWorks practice scores are self-assessment indicators based on your performance on our platform. They are not employer-verified credentials or government certifications. Always verify the specific typing speed requirements of the role you're applying for directly with the employer. Never pay any fee to apply for a job — legitimate employers do not charge candidates for screening tests.
